Upgrade Your Security without Replacing Your Infrastructure

Upgrade an aging surveillance system without replacing existing coax. Luminys A3 HD analog cameras and the X52-16KA hybrid DVR can improve image quality, add event-driven intelligence and support a phased transition to IP cameras.

Upgrade Your Security without Replacing Your Infrastructure

An aging surveillance system does not always need new wiring. For businesses with existing coax, an upgrade without rewiring can begin with targeted camera and recorder improvements. Better video and smarter event detection can preserve that investment while leaving room to introduce IP cameras as needs and budgets change.

For security integrators, the starting point for an analog security system upgrade is the site itself. An older factory may have long cable runs that are difficult to replace. A historic building may restrict new installation work. A small business may need a security camera retrofit for clearer images without the disruption of a complete system replacement. In each case, the upgrade should address the immediate problem and support the next step.

Luminys’ September 2026 dealer webinar presented a practical approach to upgrading existing analog systems. The A3 cameras refresh image quality, while the X52-16KA DVR adds recorder-based intelligence and supports a phased analog to IP camera upgrade.

Improve Image Quality with A3 HD Analog Cameras

When existing coax is still serviceable but image quality no longer meets the customer’s needs, replacing the cameras can deliver an immediate improvement without rewiring the site. Luminys A3 HD analog cameras support CVI, TVI, AHD and CVBS video output, helping installers match new cameras to a range of existing analog systems.

Before installation, confirm that the recorder supports the selected format, resolution and frame rate. Installers can then prioritize the locations that need clearer video and choose the appropriate A3 model for each view:

Capture Color When an Event Occurs

A3 cameras provide both IR and white-light illumination. As demonstrated in Luminys’ September 2026 internal webinar, LumiLux Smart can use IR during routine nighttime monitoring, switch on white light when a configured X5 DVR analytic detects an event and return to IR after the event. This configuration can provide color detail during an event without keeping white light on throughout the night, helping to minimize light pollution.

Add Intelligence with the X5 Hybrid DVR

Some customers already have useful analog cameras but need a better way to identify relevant activity. The Luminys X52-16KA is a 4K 16-channel 1U analytics hybrid DVR that adds recorder-based analytics to compatible analog video. It supports analog (CVI, TVI, AHD, CVBS) and IP inputs. On analog channels, available Analytics by Recorder include Intelligent Motion Detection (iMD), VCA line crossing and intrusion, face detection and face recognition. Only one Intelligent Mode can be selected at a time. IP channels do not support Analytics by Recorder, and enabling an IP channel disables analytics on all analog channels.

Capacity depends on the selected function: up to 16 analog channels for iMD, 8 for VCA, and 2 for face detection or face recognition. These choices should follow the customer’s priorities. A doorway may need a line-crossing rule, while a loading area may benefit from intrusion detection. Planning those functions helps ensure the recorder’s resources serve the areas that matter most.

Deploying IP Cameras in Stages

For customers moving toward IP video without replacing every camera at once, the X52-16KA provides a practical migration path. Integrators can keep compatible analog cameras in place and add IP cameras selectively as coverage needs and budgets evolve.

With 16 analog inputs and support for up to 32 IP channels, integrators have room to phase the upgrade.

Plan the Channel Mix Before Expanding

Before expanding the system, decide what matters most: recorder-based analytics or greater IP capacity. On the X52-16KA, enabling even one IP channel turns off Analytics by Recorder across all analog channels. The recorder starts with 16 analog inputs and can scale to as many as 32 IP channels by converting analog channels as needed. Planning the channel mix upfront helps align the system with the customer’s priorities today and expansion plans for tomorrow.

Build the Upgrade around the Site

A useful site survey should document existing cable condition, camera formats, recorder capabilities, power supplies, locations where the customer needs clearer images, events that require alerts and the number of cameras the system must support. Those answers determine whether a camera refresh, a recorder replacement or a phased IP migration offers the best fit.

Upgrading security can begin with the infrastructure that still serves the site well. The A3 analog cameras improve video at existing camera locations, while the X52-16KA DVR adds intelligence within supported configurations. Together, they give integrators a practical way to improve coverage, retain compatible equipment and plan future expansion.
